City of Mission Hills, Kansas2011-2012
The Mission Drive Channel entering the city of Mission Hills from Kansas City, Mo., at 64th Street and State Line Road has historically flooded State Line Road and Mission Drive, along with the First Lutheran Church and Mission Hills City Hall. In addition to limited channel capacity, the bridges for Tomahawk Road and 63rd Street restricted flow through these locations and increased the water surface elevation upstream of the bridges.
Water Resources Solutions led the project as the project manager, completed the design of the project, completed the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of the project, and completed the geotechnical investigations for slope stability and the bridge foundation.
The project included design of a bypass RCB consisting of approximately 220 LF 12’x4 RCB and 1,125 LF 12’x6’ RCB, designed to begin operating once State Line Road began to overtop. Approximately 50 curb inlet openings were placed in the sump in State Line Road and in the parking lot of the First Lutheran Church, and the 63rd Street Bridge was replaced and enlarged. About 300 LF of stream was stabilized along the project using longitudinal peak toe stone protection and rock grade controls. The project included steel encasement and CIPP lining of approximately 200 LF of sanitary sewer.
The project included detailed utility coordination, regulatory approval and a FEMA “No-Rise” certification.
